Goecha-la is a high altitude trek that takes you beyond 15,000ft. Goecha-la takes you close to the third- highest peak- Mt. Kanchenzonga. The trek apart from from being thrilling and mesmerizing, requires a lot of endurance. You will experience it all! From crossing bridges, suspension bridges over the Paa Khola, Tshushay Khola and Mentogang Khola, through which the Prek chuu river flows, to a dense jungle, @12,000 ft. The biggest reason to do this trek is the grand views of about 14 summits.

Documents required for the Trek


All the trekkers need to carry the following mandatory documents to avail permits for your Goechala trek.

 

Identity Card.

TREK ITINERARY

  • DAY - 1

    YUKSOM (5,643 ft) – TSHOKA (9701 ft); 7 hours, 17 kms

    We start the trek from Yuksom and venture into Kanchenjunga National Park, where the colours of the trees and the flowers become brighter and the air even lighter. You will cross three suspension bridges hanging over deep gorges. The trail leads you head uphill following the gorges of the Rathong river towards Tshoka.

  • DAY - 2

    TSHOKA (9701 ft) – DZONGRI (13,024 ft) via Phedang; 7 hours, 6.3 kms

    On today’s trek, you’ll be making your way uphill on a steep ascending wooden pathway, surrounded with scenic forests of alpine rhododendrons. Moving from here, the trek will take you to Dzongri, where you will get the first glimpse of Mt. Pandim and camp overnight.

  • DAY - 3

    Acclimatization Day. Dzongri (13,024 ft) to Dzongri top (13,778)

    Today is the acclimatisation day. Given the treacherous continuous hike, today you will give your body much needed rest to prepare for your continued ascent. Climb up to the top of Dzongri for an amazing view of nearby Lakshmi Pokhari for a stunning sunrise.

  • DAY - 4

    DZONGRI la (13,024 ft)– THANGSING (12,946 ft); 6 hours, 6.4 kms

    On this day, in the morning we will first visit the Dzongri hill top and after breakfast proceed towards the stunning meadow at Thangsing camp site, which is flanked by mountain ranges on either sides. You can have the magnificent view of the Kokthang (7147m), Rathong (6678m), Kabru (7353m), Simvo, Pandim and Kanchenzonga(8534m) peaks while drinking from the fresh water directly from their glaciers.

  • DAY - 5

    THANGSING (12,946 ft) – GOECHA-LA VIEW POINT ONE (15,100 ft) via Samiti lake - back to THANGSING); 9,2 kms,12hrs

    We start the day early to avoid the harsh weather conditions. After an upward climb, we descend towards the Samiti lake and then cross the Zemathang Plateau. From here you’ll ascend uphill for one hour to reach the GOECHA-LA Viewpoint and behold the breathtaking view of the mighty Kanchenzonga and Mt Pandim (6691mts). We will then need descend back to Thangsing for the night.

  • DAY - 6

    THANGSING (12,946 ft) - TSHOKA (9710 ft); 6-7 hrs, 9.9 kms

    Start the day early with the views of the Himalayas and begin to descend downhill from Thangsing. Then head towards Tshoka, passing through Prek Chu and halt in Tshoka at the Trekkers Hut.

  • DAY - 7

    TSHOKA (9710 ft) – YUKSOM (5643 ft); 6 hrs, 11.7 kms

    Today you descend down from Tshoka towards Yuksom, the last leg of this astounding tour. Rest your legs and savour the beautiful memories of the mountains.

    5) Samiti lake - One of the most pristine and holy high-altitude lakes in Sikkim. It lies exactly Infront of Mt. Kanchendzonga and is a treat to witness on a clear sunny day.

    6) Laxmi Pokhari (Lake) in Dzongri - A pristine high-altitude lake situated 3 hours walk from the Dzongri Campsite

How high and location trek route of Sikkim Kanchenjunga Goechala Trek ?

The Sikkim Kanchenjunga Goechala Trek  is a high mountain pass in Sikkim, India in the Himalaya range. The southeast face of Mt. Kanchenjunga, the world's third highest mountain, which runs about 90km altitude of 4,940 mt or 16,207 ft) the typical itinerary is over 9 days each day you will be walking about 6-7hours. the trek begin from Yuksoom  trail thrugh kanchanzonga national park with night camping at Tshoka, Dzongri, Tsansing, Lamuney, Kockchurung  end your trek Yuksom. 

Goechala Trek difficulty 

Before signing up for the Goechala Trek, most people ask, how hard is the Goechala Trek? Of all the treks in Sikkim, the Goechala Trek is one of the more difficult ones. It is considered to be a hard trek. However, anyone with moderate trekking experience should have no problems taking this trek. If you do not have much prior trekking experience or if you want to be extra prepared, some cardio preparation would benefit you. In terms of altitude, you will not have to worry, as our ascent is slow and steady. For those of you who can take on this challenge, you will be heavily rewarded with some of the best mountain views in India.

Goechala Trek Permit

Yes, for foreigners you need a permit for the Sikkim Kanchenjunga Goechala Trek. The permits required depend on where you are from. All permits will be taken care of by Ashmita Trek and Tours. Do note that citizens of China, Bangladesh, and Myanmar are not permitted to trek in this region.

The ILP (Inner Line Permit) is required for all foreigners before entering Sikkim. They are obtained either at Bagdogra Airport in Siliguri or at the entrance of Sikkim.

Kanchenjunga National Park (KNP) permit is also required, which can be obtained as you leave Yuksom village.

The Protected Area Permit (PAP) is also required for all foreigners. This is obtained in Gangtok and only through an authorized tour operator. For this reason, all foreign trekkers must book the Goechala Trek package through an government-authorized trekking agency.

Best season for Sikkim Goechala Trek 

There are two Best season for Goechala Trek first season Spring (March to May) In the springtime, in the mountain the colorful flowers surround you and cover the trail, but it does not guarantee clystar clear weather, expect some haze. The second Season is after the monsoon starting from (October to early Nov) the snow peaks show in their dazzling beauty in a clear blue sky, very low chances of Rain, dry trekking trail but it is quite cold the temperature ranges from from - 10 to 4 degrees C°

Sikkim Goechala Trek Weather/Temperature

During the springtime (March to May), temperatures fall between 11-19 C° during the day and 2-10 C° at night. Monsoon temperatures are around 15-22 C° during the day and 7 to -1 C° at night. People tend to favor trekking in Autumn, when weather is moderate and skies are clear. In the daytime, temperatures range between 6-12 C° and 5 and -3 C° at nighttime.

Keep in mind, the Goechala weather is always unpredictable. You can have the clearest of skies and in no time it can get covered by huge clouds. Regardless of the season, you should pack several layers just in case.
